Phil Wood, MA, B Mus(Hons)
After starting French horn at school in North Yorkshire, Phil enlisted into the Coldstream Guards as a Junior Musician in 1989. Upon completion of training at the Army Junior School of Music (Pirbright) and the Royal Military School of Music, he joined the Coldstream Guards Band as a French horn player and violinist in 1992.
During an 18 year span in the band he performed at the highest levels as principal horn and was fortunate enough to tour worldwide, including America, Australia, Canada, Japan, South Korea and much of Europe, working alongside various world class ensembles in the process. In addition to this he had the privilege to take part in State Ceremonial events which included the Queen's Birthday Parade, State Opening of Parliament and numerous State visits and banquets. Also during this period he also found time to work regularly with various ensembles, including Surrey Brass, Harrow Symphony Orchestra, Kingston Symphony and The London International Orchestra.
In 2006 he completed a Masters degree in performance and in the following year was accepted to attend the prestigious Bandmaster Course at the Royal Military School of Music, where, after 3 years tuition from Rob Wiffin in conducting - he went on to win the Silver Medal from the Worshipful Company of Musicians for best overall Student Bandmaster.
In August 2011, he received a 1st Class Honours Degree from Kingston University before moving to Dorset where he currently holds the post of bandmaster with the Light Cavalry Band. |
