WEDDING CONGRATULATIONS!

A big congratulations to Rhys and Clare, who were married at Bournemouth Town Hall on the 3rd of September, followed by a lovely reception at Studland Restaurant and Bistro where the band played for them both after the meal.

NEW BABY!!!!! September 2011

Pat and Ceri are the proud parents of a little girl, Eva Florence Brady, who arrived at 6.20 on Thursday 8 September. She will be in time to watch the Rugby World Cup and should have her lip in for carols this Christmas!

New Musical Director Appointed August 2011

Poole Borough Band is pleased to announce that Daniel Floyd has been appointed its new Musical Director.

Daniel joins the band as replacement for Phil Randell who, after ten years service, has taken time out to concentrate on his family business and devote more time to his family.

Daniels passion for music began at the age of five when his mother started teaching him piano at the family home in Harlow. A few years later, Daniel learned cornet at the local Salvation Army. While performing regularly at his local wind band, a vacancy for percussion became available and Daniel eagerly stepped in to seize this opportunity. Having mastered the basics, he quickly realised that orchestral percussion was where his musical path would lead him. Several years in Redbridge Brass proved his capabilities for developing and adapting to the full performance repertoire of London's highest ranked brass band.

Daniel has a diverse musical experience. He is currently a professional percussionist for two orchestras and a British Army band, and has previously taught percussion for Essex musical services. Daniel particularly enjoys passing on his knowledge, experience and enthusiasm for music to all those interested.

We wish him well and look forward to good times ahead.

Phil Randell Retires June 2011

After ten years as musical director of Poole Borough Band, Phil Randell is retiring due to work and family commitments. The band would like to take this opportunity to thank Phil for his unstinting hard work, loyalty and commitment, and for taking the band into the Championship Section (twice) and also to the National Finals. This was achieved without major changes in personnel but through hard work and dedication on Phil's part.

He will be a hard act to follow and we would wish to take this opportunity to wish Phil and Rosie all the very best for the future and hope they do not stay away too long.

In the meantime applications are being invited for the vacant position and interested parties should apply through the secretary on 01202 427230 or via the band's web site email@pooleboroughband.com

New Member April 2011

The band would like to welcome its new flugel horn player Jack Grimmett. Jack joins us from Hyde band where he had a successful period as principal cornet. We hope he has a long and enjoyable time with us.

News February 23rd 2011

“It was with great sadness that we heard of the death of Alan Whitehead, he helped so many bands in the area when needed. A lasting memory of Alan was how thrilled he was, when after 50 years of banding he was in a winning band for the first time at a contest, when he deputised with Poole and won the top section at Weston Super Mare. The picture of the band with Alan in it is in pride of place on our bandroom wall and it was also in the Bournemouth Evening Echo. He was only ever a phone call away.

Alan was a great bandsman and it was a privilege to have known him.”

New Member December 2010

The band would like to welcome Nell O'Hora to the cornet section. Nell is from Cork, Ireland and joins us in the busy lead up to Christmas. We hope she has a enjoyable time with us.

ALAN FERNIE
1. Fine, but some balance issues. Excellent cornet solo - brings band out to play!
D Steady! Basses tuning to close.
2. Can the BBb Bass be more smoother? E is comfy - effedtive playing from soloists.
F thought has gone in here - good balance - trb. A wee bit sharp? 126 - Wrong last note (horn/baritones?)
G has style and vision. Timp notes at 139? and H is rather fast! This is good - we hear music.
3. Bb Timp? Steady, but a few good points and some excellent cornets. Details being presented well.
Percussion quite shy - don’t be afraid to ‘unleash hell!’ Nicely chaotic close.
4. More warmth to open? Tam-tam bows good. S Good - lovely detail at T Troms!!! VG. The playing here is good I’d just like it to be more relaxed and ‘sensuous’!! Take time and enjoy it. Last note together!
5. Again, good solos encourage band - great tempo too! We hear it all.
Great shift - last accel. too much for me, and perhaps others!!
A good show troms. a good band, thank you.

NIGEL BODDICE, MBE
1. Much to commend from opening, 5’s mostly convincing, cornet solo excells.
Pulse de-stabilises at D - over excited quavers. A good band sound shown too.
Overall - 1st movement (nearly!) D worried me the most.
2. Some expressive solos shown, albeit some bass intonation issues to re-check. F well balanced generally.
Check temp for letter H. J a fine effort in soprano. K works fine, cornet team good.
3. and 4. Generally convincing. 198 Brass lost a little. S Flugel take time on 5’s please, keep solo line concentration.
Perc. continually for control - thanks. Solo lines integrate well, place last chord before Finale.
5. Controlled tempo - dynamics shown Tidy perc. - Bravo. Control pleases throughout last movement.
Overall: Much preparation, thought appreciated.
POSITION: 1st
West of England 1st Section Champions

Poole Win at Weston-Super-Mare 18th May 2008 !

Section Entered : Champ/First
Order of Play : 5
Musical Director : Phil Randell
Chosen Test Piece : Year of the Dragon

Below comments taken from www.themouthpeice.com -

"Nice crisp and clean start, but not without a few minor blemishes... Not sure the Sop/Trom were together either, nor were they in tune with each other... sorry!

Great ending to the first section though, very articulate, bright, and full of vigor.

Nice soloists at start of second movement, maybe a little nervous though...? Well done solo trombone on solo part. Excellent control through slow section, lovely bass sounds 'underneath' the entire band - it really helps. Excellent cresc after timpani roll, more cresc... wonderfully musical and expressive here folks. Balance I'd say was perfect, all parts can be heard through this movement, not overblown either. Some tuning issues towards the end of the muted section. Very clean Sop/Flug section... well played both.

Final movement opens well, nice clean articulate playing... until I hear some slight messy bits from lower band nothing wrong with the remainder though! I am sure you'd agree with me that you could have played better and that maybe your best performance was left - this time, and as happens so often - in the bandroom. However it was a fine performance of a fine piece. Well done, thank you".
